Sr. Major Projects Manager

The Sr. Major Projects Manager (SMPM) is responsible for leading the company’s project management and construction operations activities on major projects for a defined region. This includes directing the overall development, planning and execution of large and/or complex engineering/construction projects in that region. The SMPM provides leadership direction, and management of the project scope, cost estimating & budget, planning & scheduling, coordination and control of project resources, consultants, contractors, subcontractors, contractual requirements, project profitability, EH&S compliance and client satisfaction. The SMPM possesses broad knowledge, understanding and experience with standard engineering/construction project delivery models including EPCM, EPC, or DB. The SMPM demonstrates excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and maintains specific knowledge of planning and scheduling functions and a thorough understanding of contract administration, risk management and health & safety issues. The SMPM leads the implementation of short and long range plans for the Major Projects Group at a regional level.
Essential Functions:
  • Sets the priority of Safety as paramount in all planning and execution.
  • Manages the disciplines of safety, quality, estimating, procurement, project controls, and construction on a regional level.
  • Provides leadership, support, performance review, and management of each reporting Discipline Manager (DM).
  • In accordance with Middough Advanced Project Procedures (MAPP) leads Major Project (MP) EPC or CM proposal development efforts in defining and establishing project scopes of work project strategies, execution plans, and project budgets.
  • Provides construction leadership to projects in the planning and execution of Middough scopes of service.
  • Plays an expert role in field work, construction supervision, and/or problem solving activities.
  • Technical expert and leader in the training and developing of company personnel in construction systems.  Organizes and presents internal training programs.
  • Knowledgeable of and implements Company practices, policies, procedures and industry codes and standards pertinent to construction systems and project execution.
  • Works with Technology and Business management to select and assign staff to projects, as required.
  • Provides overall supervision, training and development of assigned major projects personnel.
  • Estimates and/or causes department managers to estimate man-hours, prepares scopes of work, and recommends staff assignments on projects.
  • Conducts financial review of assigned projects and ensure adherence to schedule and budget at all stages.
  • Documents work in well written professional technical and project status reports.
  • Assures the construction manager assigned to each project site acts as the Company’ “business representative” at the job site, establishing and maintaining good relations with the client, local community, labor, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Develops and assures safety programs, quality assurance, supervision, subcontract coordination, administration, labor and client relations, material control, and purchasing are conducted in accordance with corporate policies and procedures.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent experience
  • Broad range engineering, procurement, and construction experience, to include significant experience as Senior Project Manager, Regional Construction Manager, Risk Manager, Estimator, or a combination of these positions
  • Experience managing the construction of process and facilities with contract value of at least $200 million in both a lump sum and cost reimbursable project format
  • Thorough understanding of project controls (e.g., planning, scheduling, cost control)
  • Strong background/knowledge of the constructability of EPC projects, both domestic and potentially international
  • “Businessperson’s mind set”, i.e., the ability to understand and manage the contractual and financial aspects of the project with a strong Financial Quotient (FQ)
  • Ability to oversee several EPC construction projects in various stages of completion simultaneously
  • Proven understanding of human resources/industrial relations laws and regulations related to both merit shop and union operations
  • Thorough knowledge of construction safety issues and practices, coupled with a passion for establishing and maintaining a “zero tolerance” safety environment on every construction site
  • Proven ability to effectively lead managers 
  • The ability to inspire and motivate subordinates to a peak level of performance
  • Willingness and ability to build strong working relationships with other corporate executives and function as part of a management team
  • Maintains professional certifications with current industry continuing education
  • Possesses unquestioned personal integrity and moral and ethical standards
  • Superior verbal and written communication and presentation skills
