Sr. API Engineer – Pharma-Bio

The Sr. API Engineer is a recognized technical expert in one or more specialty areas who provides engineering evaluations, designs and recommendations for assigned projects. The ST provides recommendations based on analyses, calculations, investigations related to defining opportunities for improving systems performance and/or to meet new design requirements. The ST mentors and trains design engineers to develop/maintain area(s) of technical expertise.
Essential Functions:
The staff engineer collects and prepares data/information and performs detailed engineering calculations. The staff engineer performs engineering design and analysis on complex or unique problems and coaches/mentors less experienced engineers, designers, and drafters.  The staff engineer demonstrates technical/professional growth annually by maintaining active membership in professional organizations and participating in technical seminars/courses. Responsibilities include the conceptual, basic process design of unit operations and preparation of process engineering deliverables such as process flow diagrams, heat and material balances, P&ID’s, specifications for equipment and instrumentation systems. Capable of leading process engineering and multi-discipline teams through all design phases of a capital project.  Collects and prepares data/information, performs detailed engineering calculations, and writes formal engineering/technical reports. Develops technical equipment specifications & data sheets, performs technical evaluation of bids, and recommends best value design, which meets client requirements for operability, reliability, maintainability and safety. Leadership in field work by checking installations and problem solving activities. Performs calculation checking and equipment vendor drawing reviews. Serves as Project Lead for projects that are more complex by estimating work hours, developing scope of work, making staffing recommendations, and checking drawings.  Interacts with our clients,  other departments and suppliers to obtain pertinent information.

  • BS or MS in Chemical Engineering or Equivalent.
  • Experience in the Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology or Healthcare Industries necessary
  • Experience with Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients highly desirable
  • Industrial microbial and/or enzymatic API experience in an engineering consulting and/or manufacturing industry highly desirable
  • Experience with developing and testing processes during the Clinical Phases (specifically Phase III) highly desirable
  • Current with relevant Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology or Healthcare equipment vendors.
  • Experience supporting or as part of validation/qualification.  Key emphasis on URS, DQs, FATs, SATs, & IQ/OQ’s.
  • Preparing processes and/or process equipment for commercialization is required.
  • Process optimization experience is a plus.
  • Experience with process modeling software, including ASPEN plus, HYSYS, SuperPro Designer and hydraulic modeling software, preferred.
  • PE preferred.
  • Strong technical and communication skills as well as the ability to develop and create solutions to challenging problems.
  • Qualified candidate will possess teamwork and leadership skills.
The staff API engineer should have a deep technical/scientific knowledge of API fundamentals and end-to-end process to efficiently convert feedstock to ingredient products. 
The staff API engineer should have a deep technical/scientific knowledge of API fundamentals and end-to-end process to efficiently convert feedstock to ingredient products.  Qualified candidates should possess good knowledge of scale-up and process optimization techniques, including an understanding and ability to apply knowledge to scale bench-top and pilot plant research to commercial production.  They should have background in the development of business cases involving techno-economic modeling and alternative technology analysis/evaluation.  Candidates should have understanding of bioprocess and downstream recovery and purification technologies, including the understanding and applied knowledge necessary to develop and improve individual and combinations of unit operations for the purification and processing of API derived compounds.  A benefit would be specific design experience with fermenters, API optimization, solid-state API, filtration of bioproducts, solvent extraction of bioproducts, concentration of bioproducts, drying of bioproducts, API air supply, cooling and venting systems, clean-in-place systems, and steam-in-place systems.  Candidates should have experience in all aspects of process and utility engineering including front-end design, material and energy balances, hydraulic and thermal engineering calculations, generation of PFDs and P&IDs, equipment application, sizing and specification.  Troubleshooting, start-up, commissioning, validation and operations expertise would be a plus.
