Instrumentation & Controls Engineer – On site

We are seeking, on a temporary basis of no less than 4 months and possibly up to 2 years, an Instrumentation Engineer with a solid process industry background. 

Position Description:
The Engineer collects and prepares data/information and performs detailed engineering calculations. Engineer performs basic engineering design for review and approval by senior department personnel. The Engineer demonstrates technical/professional growth annually by maintaining active membership in professional organizations and participating in technical seminars/courses.
This position supports a single large capital project, key to the future success of the company.  We are seeking a team member, who will collaborate to shepherd the project through the basic engineering scoping stage and then through the detailed design portion of the project. Commissioning newly installed instrumentation at the end of the project is also anticipated.

Essential Functions:
  • Collects and prepares data/information and performs detailed engineering calculations.
  • Assists in field work, checking installations, and problem solving activities.
  • Serves as Project Lead for select single-discipline projects by estimating work hours, developing scope of work, making staffing recommendations, and checking drawings.
  • Interacts with other departments and suppliers to obtain pertinent information. The instrumentation engineer will act as the owner’s (Ashland) representative with respect to directing the effort of the consulting engineering company performing basic engineering and then detailed design.

Skills and Qualifications:
  • Engineering Technology degree or Bachelor of Science in an Engineering discipline required
  • EIT certification
  • 5 + years design experience of petroleum refineries and chemical plant projects
  • Candidates will have experience with specifying field instrumentation; specifying DCS/PLC hardware and wiring design is required; working knowledge of P&ID’s, PFD’s,  loop diagrams, installation details, and NEC/ISA standards.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Working knowledge of Autocad

Additional Notes:
The instrumentation engineer will act as the owner’s representative with respect to directing the effort of the consulting engineering company performing basic engineering and then detailed design. This successful candidate will possess a broad assortment of skills such as the specifying process instrumentation for temperature, pressure, flow, level, and analytical applications. Experience with hazardous area classification, intrinsic safety, device level networks such as Profibus DP and PA, and instrument/network grounding is expected. Application and sizing of modulating control valves in support of process engineers is an additional requirement.

Collaborating with project managers, process engineers, and reliability engineers as part of the project team is essential. Interaction with consulting engineering companies, automation system integrators, specialty chemical plant personnel, equipment manufacturers, and instrumentation contractors will be a routine part of the job. As part of ensuring the success of the project the instrumentation engineer will ensure instrument data sheets provided by the consultant meet the process, hazardous area location, and control system I/O requirements. The instrumentation engineer will ensure the Distributed Control System I/O interfaces with Original Equipment Manufacturer supplied gear are designed correctly by the consulting engineering firm, including schematic drawing reviews. Review and approval of consulting engineer supplied loop drawings and I/O drawings is also expected.

  • When working outside Middough’s office, appropriate safety training and safety equipment will be provided by Middough and/or Client, as required.
  • This job involves approximately 30% travel to Hopewell, Virginia
  • May require occasional overnight travel to another client location/facility or the home office.
