Job Description

Architecture Department Manager

The Architecture Department Manager / Senior Architect position comprises a dual role; one as Manager of the Architecture Department and the other as Project Architect leading multidiscipline teams within the organization.  The successful candidate will manage and direct the work of architectural staff and design personnel in order to complete assigned work on time, within budget, and in accordance with applicable codes/standards and Middough work process guidelines. This position is responsible for providing direction to the architectural design team in development of small, large, and complex projects throughout the entire project life cycle from conceptual design through construction close-out for Public (Federal, State, Local), Higher Education and Industrial projects. The successful candidate performs difficult and complex duties requiring independent decision making and use of extensive related experience while administering corporate policy as required and developing and implementing long range employee development plans and objectives. Development, management and maintenance of required staff levels and capabilities mix within the department and responsibility for all personnel transactions in the department is required. This position provides technical leadership and assists architects & engineers in solving complex design problems through state-of-the-art technology such as Building Information Modeling and other visualization tools such as Sketch-Up, Rhino 3D, 3ds Max, etc.

Essential Functions: 
  • 15+ years’ experience providing architectural design and construction document preparation and comprehensive construction administration as part of a professional architecture/engineering firm.  Recommends best value design which meets client requirements for intended use as well as operability, reliability, maintainability and safety.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (IBC, NFPA, etc.)
  • Leads architectural design analysis by interpreting, organizing, executing and/or coordinating technical and/or design assignments.
  • Develops designs, drafts specifications and produces drawings to define the architectural scope of projects.
  • Performs specialized investigations such as existing conditions verification, assists in preparation of construction cost estimates and participates in financial comparisons of building system alternatives.
  • Applies advanced architectural theories, concepts, principles and processes to provide solutions to complex design projects.
  • Manages development of construction documents including specifications being prepared by architectural staff and reviews and confirms drawing development progress.
  • Assists in review of technical evaluation of construction bids
  • Uses Middough work processes to provide quality checks and review of projects with architectural components.
  • Takes an active role in support of business development activities and provides support and input for client proposals, SOQ’s, and presentations.
  • Plans, develops, coordinates and directs department personnel to the successful completion of projects.
  • Manages quality and accuracy standards and reviews and approves completed design documents.
  • Determines department staffing needs and recruits, hires, develops and motivates architectural team.
Skills and Qualifications: 
  • Architecture degree (BArch or MSArch) from an Accredited US Architectural Program
  • Current professional registration in Architecture (IL mandatory-DE, NJ, PA and NC preferred or capability to acquire)
  • Experience with Federal Government and Higher Education clients.
  • Knowledgeable in performing code reviews for Industrial facilities.
  • Knowledgeable in pharmaceutical and/or biotech cGMP practices and regulations with emphasis on facilities, production areas, laboratories, and other clean spaces is desirable.
  • Experience in bulk chemicals, food and beverage is desirable.
  • NCARB Certification is a plus
  • LEED AP Accreditation is a plus
  • AIA membership is a plus
